As a result of a government art scholardship
in 1889, Munch traveled to to Paris to study for three years. There
he met artists who become extremely influential in his artwork including
impressionints Vincent
Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin
and Henri
Toulouse-Lautrec. He next traveled
to Germany where he created The Scream, his most famous
painting.
Melancholy is prevelant in most of Munch’s paintings. His
sexual fears are seen in his portrayals of women, often appearing
frair and evil. His inner issues are also portrayed in some of his
self portraits. His psychosis ultimately forced a nervous breakdown,
and he returned to Norway for the remainder of his life in 1908.
