Hopper made several trips to Europe during the heart of Cubism,
but had little interest in the movement. He focused more on the European
realists, which greatly influenced his early works, and established
characteristics that would remain throughout his career: compositional
style based on simple, large geometric forms; flat masses of color;
and the use of architectural elements in his scenes for their strong
verticals, horizontals, and diagonals.
Hopper employed himself as in illustrator and commercial artist until
1925, when he painted House by the Railroad (Museum of Modern
Art, New York City). This piece established him as a marketable, professional
artist where his prominence remained until his death.
