Frida
Kahlo was born in 1908 in Coyoicoàn, near
Mexico City, to a Mexican mother and German father. Recovering from
a severe bus accident, Kahlo taught herself to paint. After only three
years of painting, she took her work to famous artist, Diego Rivera,
who encouraged her to continue her interest in art. |
In
1929, Rivera and Kahlo would marry, and would engage in an extremely
tumultuous relationship. Regardless, Rivera was inspiration for paintings
both in technique and feeling. She used broad, simplified color areas
and a deliberately naive style in her paintings. She also emphasized
her Mexican heritage through references to archaeology and folk art.
Her work also reflects the pain she feels as a result of a turbulent
marriage to Rivera. Many of her self portraits are of a pained, broken
woman.
Her home in Coyoicoàn is now the permanent home to the official Frida
Kahlo museum.
