The years of 1901-1903 defined the Picasso Blue Period, his first original style since he began formal art instruction. As a dramatic turn from his earlier artwork, the themes in Picasso’s paintings turned very dark and depressed. Although it is unknown when or why the Blue Period began, certainly the suicide of his friend Casagemas impacted Picasso greatly. His death is the primary focus of several of his paintings in 1901.
The Old Guitarist by Pablo Picasso
In previous pieces, subjects were painted in brilliant colors – bright café scenes and women in big hats seated at outdoor restaurants. Now the color scheme changed from bright colors to an almost exclusive monochromatic use of blue shading, greys and whites. His subjects, once looked at with a ruthless and satirical attitude, are now treated more sympathetically. They are now beggars, street musicians and blind men.
